How gap lists in Source Map work

Find the domains that are cited alongside your rivals but never alongside you, and decide which are worth pursuing.

Source Map shows which domains and pages appear in the answers you track. Its most useful view is the gap list.

#What it is

A gap is a domain, other than your own, that is cited in answers naming a tracked competitor but in none that name you. The list is ordered by how many of your collected answers cite the domain.

For each source you can see:

  • The source type (editorial, review site, community, documentation, marketplace, video).
  • How many answers cite it, and in how many of them you or a competitor were named.
  • Which engines cite it, and a sample page.

#How to use it

Start with the top three. For each, ask:

  1. Why do they cite our rivals? Is it comparison content, original data, a product directory?
  2. Is there a legitimate reason for us to be there? A review we can earn, a listing we can claim, a correction to an out-of-date description.
  3. What would we give them? A better source than the page they cite today: documentation, data or a fair comparison.

Gap lists don't tell you to chase every domain. They tell you where answer evidence is concentrated so you can spend effort deliberately.

#What we deliberately didn't build

  • No "buy a placement" marketplace. Manufactured endorsements mislead readers and tend to age badly.
  • No single "authority score" for sources. A source's influence depends on the prompt, the engine and the date; the list shows those directly.

#Availability

Full gap lists are included on Summit, Expedition and during any trial. Other plans see how many gaps exist and the first one in full. See the Source Map docs for details.
